Lourens Adriaanse retires

Lourens Adriaanse has been diagnosed with lymphoma cancer and is currently on treatment. He has therefore decided to retire from professional rugby and focus on regaining his health. He plans to finish his articles in accounting.

Lourens contributed to the Sharks team from 2014-2017 and again since 2021. We wish him a speedy recovery and all the best in his new career.

Sharks shade the Lions in a URC warm-up

The Sharks traveled to Ellis Park just before the weekend and managed to edge the Lions by 45-43 scoring 7 tries to the hosts’ 6. Scorers for the Sharks: Penxe, Bholi, Fassi 2, Jooste 2, Abrahams.

New signings Rohan Janse van Rensburg and Vincent Tshituka did not feature in the extended squad.

Player movement at the Sharks

The Sharks have gained 7 new players for a loss of 8. Lionel Cronje will be back along with new signing Rohan Janse van Rensburg to add some direction to the Sharks back line. The Sharks however do loose 3 centres in Marius Louw, Jeremy Ward and Rynhardt Jonker.

All the best for all the players that contributed at the Sharks. Sad to see stalwarts like Ruben van Heerden and Sbu Nkosi leaving but sometimes a move to a new environment gets a player’s career back on track – just ask Madosh Tambwe.

High profile signing Eben Etzebeth is unlikely to feature for the Sharks until next year. The names of Carlu Sadie and Vincent Tshituka should definitely appear in URC team announcements though.

New Sharks signing – Update 2.0

Yesterday the Sharks announce the signing of Vincent Tshituka from the Lions on a three year deal. At only 23 he will be one to watch for the future. He’s also not a small lad at 1.95m and 107kg. Some good performances placed him on the Bok radar but before that can happen he will need to get his SA passport. Although the Sharks loose forward department is well stocked for now I’m sure he will add value and further depth to the Sharks loose forward pool.

Today the Sharks announce the signing of another Lions player in Carlù Sadie. The 25 year old will join the Sharks on a 2 year contract and will for sure help to prop up the tight head department.

And there is yet another new player signing announced. Well not totally new as Lionel Cronje previously played for the Sharks. The 32 year old Cronje signed a 2 year contract.

Etzebeth to join the Sharks in July

Eben Etzebeth has signed a contract with the Sharks until 2017.

He will join the team in July. With Bok commitments he will probably only play in a Sharks jersey in 2023 / or December 2022.

In other news Grant Williams will be suspended for 4 games and will only be eligible to play from the 13th March.

Neil Powell upgraded to DOR

The Sharks have appointed Neil Powell (previously announced as defense coach) as Director of Rugby from September 2022. Sean Everitt and Etienne Fynn will effectively then report to Neil.

The Sharks have great players and can play some marvelous rugby at times. Unfortunately there have also been something lacking in Sharks culture over the years – where talented teams can often put up some pretty indifferent error-ridden performances.

Hopefully Neil can bring his experience from the Bok Sevens setup and find what is missing in the Sharks setup and start by improving it.
