Bosch and Notshe on the bench for Bulls

Gerbrandt Grobler and Henco Venter start in the pack while Sikhumbuzo Notshe will make a welcome return later in the game. Marius Louw comes in at inside centre while Lukhanyo Am puts the 13 jersey back on. Curwin Bosch replaces Boeta Chaimberlain on the bench.

The Sharks will need to improve all over the park after an indifferent performance against the Stormers. Neil Powell (future defense coach for the Sharks after the current Sevens season) visited the Sharks this week – hopefully he can provide some tips on how to improve the back line defense after the Stormers regularly found gaps to exploit.

Am to dazzle from 12

Ben Tapuai picking up an injury during training required a midfield reshuffle with Lukhanyo Am moving to 12 and Jeremy Ward coming in at 13. Grant Williams and Boeta Chaimberlain move to the bench with Jaden Hendrikse and Tito Bonilla starting this week. Werner Kok moves onto the bench.

Cape Town is usually a good hunting ground for the Sharks – so hopefully the Sharks can play to their potential and put the Stormers away. The Sharks will have to improve their exits and cut down the penalty count.

Sharks vs Griquas

Etienne Fynn has named 6 new caps in the match day squad for the Kwas game. Eduan Keyter will make a Sharks debut against his old team and OJ Noah his first Currie Cup game for the Sharks. Jason Alexander (hooker – ex WP), Dian Bleuler (prop – ex WP), Corne Rahl (lock – ex SA rugby academy) and Josh Moon (flank – former UCT captain) will also make their debuts from the bench.

A very happy Sharks 2022

The Sharks will be competing in the URC and the Currie Cup concurrently requiring separate coaching teams for each competition. Etienne Fynn has been appointed as head coach for the Currie Cup assisted by JP Pietersen. The team of specialist coaches (Warren Whiteley (lineouts), Phiwe Nomlomo (off-the-ball and skills), John McFarland (defence) and Aksventi Giorgadze (scrums)) will be shared between teams as needed.

It will be interesting how the Sharks manage the extended squad for both these competitions. This will be a much more competitive Currie Cup as the 4 URC franchises will be stretched for depth having to put out pretty much two match day squads in most weeks.

Up to the end of February SA rugby will be a very local affair before the Sharks (hopefully) start playing overseas teams again.

Strong team for the Bulls

Due to the Omicron variant disrupting the URC schedule the SA teams will play each other this weekend.

Sean Everitt has selected a strong team featuring a number of Springboks, but I am getting the midfield which I have always been waiting for to see – Lukhanyo Am in the 12 jersey and Jeremy Ward in 13.
